In this funny, fierce, and poignant memoir, world-renowned chef and restaurateur Barbara Lynch recounts her rise from a hard-knocks South Boston childhood to culinary stardom.  

Lynch credits the defiant spirit of her upbringing in tough, poor "Southie," a neighborhood ruled by the notorious Whitey Bulger gang, with helping her bluff her way into her first professional cooking jobs and develop a distinct culinary style through instinct and sheer moxie.  She now oversees seven celebrated restaurants ranging from a casual but elegant "clam shack" to Boston's epitome of modern haute cuisine.

One of seven children born to an overworked single mother, Lynch was raised in a housing project.  She earned a daredevil reputation for boosting anything on four wheels (even a city bus), petty theft, drinking and doing drugs, and narrowly escaping arrest -- haunted all the while by a painful buried trauma.

Out of Line describes Lynch's remarkable process of self-invention, including her encounters with colorful characters of the food world, and vividly evokes the magic of creation in the kitchen.  It is also a love letter to South Boston and its vanishing culture.

Join Chef Barbara Lynch at Menton for the newest installment of our Full Plate lunch series, beginning in January 2017.

Full Plate Lunches began in 2012 as a forum for guests to gather, eat, network and learn over an open discussion with extraordinary guest speakers. We're reinvigorating the series in 2017 with a focus on the people who inspire us, especially those hailing from our home city of Boston.

Lauren Schadt Baker, First Lady of Massachusetts

Lauren currently serves as the First Lady of Massachusetts alongside her husband Governor Charlie Baker. Lauren grew up in Westport, Connecticut and Kenilworth, Illinois. After earning her masters from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, she worked in advertising account management and training development in New York, then later at Hill Holliday in Boston. In 2010 and 2014, Lauren joined her husband Charlie to campaign for Governor of Massachusetts, founding and chairing a coalition and campaigning daily. She currently spends her time volunteering for a number of organizations, on the board of directors for American Red Cross of Massachusetts, and a founding member of the Tiffany Circle Society of Women Leaders. Lauren is a long time member of the board of the Massachusetts Association for Mental Health, where she led the organization’s rebranding effort and coordinates the annual fundraiser. 


Kathy Abbott, President & CEO of Boston Harbor Now

As President and CEO of Boston Harbor Now, Kathy is focused on championing the economic, social, and environmental contributions of Boston Harbor with an emphasis on equity and sustainability.  

Kathy has lent her extensive experience in government and non-profits while CEO at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Interim President and Executive Vice President at the Trustees of Reservations, CEO of the Boston Harbor Alliance, and the first Vice President for Program at the School for Field Studies.  Her career began in state government as the first Assistant Secretary for Land Conservation in the Dukakis Administration, creating the Division of Resource Conservation under Governor Weld.  Kathy later was the first Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Kathy’s volunteer efforts have always focused on children, mentoring and tutoring in Boston and Cambridge Public Schools, as well as volunteering for the Big Sister Association and New England Home for Little Wanderers where she helped launch a pilot college prep program.


Martin J. Walsh, Mayor of Boston

Born and raised in Boston’s neighborhood of Dorchester, Mayor Walsh was sworn in as the city’s 54th mayor in 2014.  He previously served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives where he was a leader on job creation and worker protections; substance abuse, mental health, and homelessness; K-12 education; and civil rights. He played a key role defending Massachusetts’ pioneering stand on marriage equality.

As a child, Mayor Walsh survived Burkett’s lymphoma, thanks to the extraordinary care he received at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. His recovery from alcoholism as a young adult led to his lifelong commitment to the prevention and treatment of addiction.  

Since taking office, Mayor Walsh has focused on strengthening Boston’s schools, developing Boston as an innovation hub, creating opportunity for low-income workers, implementing initiatives to prevent and treat substance abuse, and investing in parks, libraries, and public safety.

Two-time James Beard Award-Winner and Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef, Barbara Lynch is regarded as one of the world’s leading chefs and restaurateurs. 

After working under some of Boston’s greatest culinary talents, Barbara traveled to Italy, where she learned about the country’s cuisine firsthand from local women. Inspired by this formative trip, Barbara earned a spot among Food & Wine’s “Ten Best New Chefs in America” in 1996 as executive chef at Galleria Italiana.

In 1998, Barbara opened a restaurant of her own, No. 9 Park in Boston’s Beacon Hill. Now, as Chef/Owner of Barbara Lynch’s Gruppo, Barbara oversees seven celebrated culinary concepts, No. 9 Park, B&G Oysters, The Butcher Shop, Stir, Drink, Sportello, and Menton. 

Barbara’s cookbook, “Stir: Mixing It Up in The Italian Tradition” received a Gourmand Award for Best Chef Cookbook. Her memoir, “Out of Line” will be published in April, 2017.
